Time Of Your Life. I close my eyes, take a snapshot. I have the photo. One photo. But I’m lucky to have it. Everything but my memories and that one photo have long since disappeared from my life. The only interaction I have with others happens once a day. Mealtime. And it’s always the same. “Eat well, comrade. They’ll hang you in the morning.” The mouth I see through the small opening has said the same thing daily for as long as I can remember. If I manage to hold on long enough, I may just keep my neck. I know why I’m here but I don’t know why I’m here. I’m a subversive. I don’t know what that means. I write poems. Simple poems. It’s all I know. I’m not the only subversive. Apparently there are many. Artists, painters, writers.

The guards didn’t search me carefully enough. Nobody ever comes in here. One photo. Of her. Taken on a Friday night long ago. When times were better. I took that photo. A busy cafe at night. In the days that followed I had a copy made for her. I am not sure she still has it. I am not sure if she is still alive. There has been no news. Not within this six by eight-foot cell anyway. The lights flicker once before they turn them off for the night. I stare at the photo. And think of Friday night. Darkness comes. In my mind’s eye I see the photo. This time I’m in the photo. Sitting next to her. And it’s Friday Night once more ... xoRJ
