about

Private Eye. Meet me after midnight, baby. Nothing strange there. That’s when I do my best work. Just another night for me. It’s a lonely job. I’m my own best-kept secret. A trench coat full of secrets. I’m blue-collar, baby. Like your daddy. Salt of the earth. That’s why you hired me. Your man’s not very smart. He left his rubber boots out in the rain. Sadly, on someone else’s back porch. Sorry to break it to you. You had a feeling. And I can’t sugar coat it. There’s always a touch of irony to life. No matter which life you’re living. You’ll always loathe me. I’ll present truths to you. Pictures. Folders. Notes. Receipts. You’ll pay me for a job well done but you’ll always shun me on the street. You were all over me when you hired me. Little Miss Lonely. Batting those baby blues. Well, I expected nothing less. You’re not my first client. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Your take on things. Not mine. But hey, it’s the forties.

You knew where to find me. On the wrong side of the tracks. I’m sorry you didn’t expect to find morals there. I’ll take your money. No regrets. I worked hard for it. My cupboard’s bare and rent’s a little late. It’s a life. You’ve got to get through it. So I look for the silver lining. Aah. Blessings are many. My wallet is fat for now. It’s stopped raining. Chester, or whatever the hell his name is, is boinking the shit out of Sally. They’re tucked in for the night. Little Miss Lonely is armed with all the evidence she needs. And it’s Friday Night. My job is done. Think I’ll wander to the Canada Hotel and catch this Robert James guy I’ve been hearing about. Talk about a cat with nine lives … xoRJ

lyrics

Meet me after midnight, baby …
Meet me after midnight, baby …
Meet me after midnight, baby …
Meet me after midnight, baby …

They told her she could find me
On the wrong side of the tracks
She checked out my credentials
And then she called me back
A little out of season
Cupboard’s bare and rent’s a little late -
Oh, yeah -

She knows I’m over thirty
And the only local dirty private eye
Meet me after midnight, baby … yeah, yeah -
Meet me after midnight, baby …

Nobody ever sees me
My scene is never blown
The chick was in the hen house
So the fox was bound to show
Night loves surprises -
Like this pair of rubber boots out in the rain -
Oh, yeah -

Lies, deceit, and worry
You’re gonna need a dirty private eye
Meet me after midnight, baby - yeah, yeah

Watch the rats all scurry
When you find yourself a dirty private eye
Meet me after midnight, baby - yeah, yeah
Meet me after midnight, baby - private eye -

They told her she could find me
On the wrong side of the tracks
Something in the hen house
Want to make the fox come back

She knows I’m over thirty
And the only local dirty private eye
Meet me after midnight, baby -

Watch the rats all scurry
When you find yourself a dirty private eye
Meet me after midnight, baby - yeah, yeah

Lies, deceit, and worry
You’re gonna need a dirty private eye
Meet me after midnight, baby - yeah, yeah
Private Eye —
Meet me after midnight, baby -
Meet me after midnight, baby -
Meet me after midnight, baby -
Meet me after midnight, baby -
Meet me after midnight — private eye
