PIECE OF YOUR GHOST. “Here’s a private show for a piece of your ghost.” I was awfully tempted. I imagine every photo collection has at least one racy shot. You’ve got to respect ambition. So here we go. Second song in and boasting. Chest puffed out. Letting the world know this is indeed the title track. Big-headed. If it wasn’t for me there wouldn’t even be an album. A ghost with attitude. In spades. Funny old world. The moment I sat the pen and guitar down I knew I had the cornerstone for an album. Ghosts. I have plenty of them. Every song contains a multitude of them. I live with that. But they’re most excellent ghosts. Well behaved indeed. Not at all like those Leprechaun angels I’ve mentioned on previous album liner notes. And perhaps ghosts are a common thing. Some you want to banish and some you don’t. And then there’s the ones who persistently get stuck in the toaster. It’s a heat thing I guess. Never once did it occur to me to place this song in the top slot. In the great scheme of things this was the second song written for this album. RIVERSIDE ROCKROLL REVIVAL wasn’t originally intended to end up here but was indeed the first one written. Both Piece Of Your Ghost and LONG DARK NIGHT were written in the same session. A session that included two other songs. Waiting in the wings. I’m sure they’ll find their way into the SWEET TOOTH collection at some point. After listening to the lead-off track I knew I’d found the one-two punch. I was contemplating removing the intro kick but after a million listens I decided to leave things as is. You’ll never know how often I thought of that. As I got closer to final mix-down I actually started to groove on it. Go figure. All the fave ghosts come around during a mix-down. Dad, brother Darcy, Uncle Mal and another million stars I love. Sitting in silence until the magic starts dialing itself in. Those little pieces. There’s an awful lot of happy ghosts in CandyLand at the moment. And I smile the brightest … xoRJ
