about

After Eight. Make my way home, hope to explain. Wow. I really blew it. I’m about a block from home and I’m a drowned rat. I missed the train. It wasn’t on time. And I cut it too close. My fault. It couldn’t be helped. I would have driven there but when I went to the parking garage I found the exit blocked by a moving van. I spent some time searching for the owner. Rang the building manager. No answer. Time to get trucking. So I ended up walking after missing the train. The next train wouldn’t do. And about half-way there it started raining.

So here I am making my way home. It’s almost nine now. This just may be the saddest Friday Night ever. She’s so popular. Men falling all over her. About a week ago I finally found the nerve to ask her out. She said sure. We’d meet at her house and then go for coffee at a little cafe around the corner. She scribbled her address on a post-it note. The ink on the note ran in the rain. Does that really happen in real life? It’s not a dog ate my homework type of thing. There’s a date on the line. I’ve been beating myself up all the way home. This would never happen to anyone else. As I unlock my front door, the phone rings. It’s her! She called my work and got my home number. She was worried about me. I started to explain. And she’d like to see me if it’s not too late. Meet somewhere. Is it ever too late on a Friday Night? ... xoRJ

lyrics

Just a little bit soaked
Caught in the rain
Could’ve been dry - but I -
Missed the afternoon train

Holding a note
Seen better days
Prowled your alley once - now I -
Can’t remember the way

Walking for hours and hours
Can’t find your gate
Oh, it took me forever and ever to ask for a date
I should have been here by five
I’m kinda late
Oh, the face on my watch is all scratched but it’s after eight

Tenement blocks
That all look the same
I’m feeling shy - ‘cause I -
Missed the afternoon train

Make my way home
Hope to explain
I get one more chance - swear I -
I’ll make the afternoon train

I’ve been walking for hours and hours
Can’t find your gate
You know it took me forever and ever to ask for a date
I should have been here by five
I’m kinda late - so late -
You know - the face on my watch is all scratched but it’s after eight

Yeah - It’s after eight - it’s after eight - it’s after eight - it’s after eight …

Walking for hours and hours
Can’t find your gate
You know - it took me forever and ever to ask for a date
I swear - I wanted to be here by five
I’m kinda late - I’m so late
Because - the face on my watch is all scratched but it’s after eight

It’s after eight … (tick-tock)
