about

Another song about Jimmy Longneck, the main character in my unfinished Novella, 'Back To Bethlehem'. I really did meet this American draft dodger while hitchhiking in my early teens, and Jimmy was as wild and as reckless as they come. Our record label did not want the title of the third CD to be 'Slouching Towards Bethlehem' ... fearing that the music would be seen in a religious light, despite the fact that Jimmy Longneck hailed from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Only after the track listing was presented and finalized did they agree to the title. I keep all my photos, greeting and postcards in tin boxes and one day I stumbled on a postcard Jimmy had sent me back in '77. What is this rough beast ... well, that's how it starts. After I finished chapter three of the book I wrote this song. It was never my intention to have it on the 'Beth' CD because I'd always really liked the fact that Led Zeppelin's 'Houses Of The Holy' wasn't on the album of the same name.

lyrics

Here I am in Bethlehem
Looking for your street
In a Sixty Ford I found along the way

When night falls in Montana
Some woman’s gonna scream
The Ford ain’t where she left it yesterday

You said if I got lonely it was best to come on by
After twenty years or more, what’s a few more miles…

I’m driving aimlessly in Bethlehem, PA
Looking for an address that was postmarked ‘98
I’ve got to see the girl but I can’t stay
They know me well in Bethlehem

It might be time to change my ride
Find a small sedan
I don’t recognize the street I’m on

When dawn hits old Savannah
A lawyer will come home
To a ransacked house and all his money gone

You said if I got lonely it was best to come on by
I just came back to say hello before I say goodbye

They know me well here
I said they know me well here
Yeah, they know me well in Bethlehem, PA.
